Rauw Alejandro
Despacito is a song from 2017 released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It was the single that became the most streamed track worldwide within just six months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music has not only brought attention back to the genre, but also to Latin music generally. The Billboard Top 100 included four mostly Spanish songs from 2016 as opposed to two in 2015. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it to the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 of them. Following the time that Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, famous artists started to work with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together on MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma. Madonna collaborated with Maluma for Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. In the year 2020, some Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the direction of the genre toward the mainstream. Yet, a young generation such as Rauw Alejandro was keen to continue the evolution. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music, as well as various other genres was a typical procedure.
